From the Urals to Cape Cod

My name is Tatiana Riabukhina, and I create under the pseudonym Tanya Ray. I am an artist originally from the Urals, Russia. Growing up in a family immersed in music and ballet, I developed an early sensitivity to atmosphere, rhythm, and form, which deeply shaped my artistic journey. This rich environment ignited my passion for art, a passion that continues to thrive through my watercolor and print creations today.

A journey of artistic evolution

I began drawing in early childhood and completed formal training at a children’s art school during my teenage years. Later, I earned a Master’s-level degree in Architecture and worked as an architect for many years, reserving my painting for vacations and free time, focusing on drawing and watercolor. My dedication led to participation in group exhibitions in Germany, Italy, and Russia. During the economic challenges of the 1990s, I even sold my watercolors to visitors, with some of those works potentially residing in homes worldwide today.

Inspired by the Cape Cod coastline

Four years ago, moving to the United States marked a significant turning point in my artistic journey. Now based in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, I primarily work in watercolor and mixed media. The coastal landscape of New England—its lighthouses, harbors, shifting weather, and luminous light—along with the region’s vibrant artistic community, profoundly inspires my work. My art explores memory, transformation, and the relationship between nature and human presence, viewing landscape as an emotional and psychological space.

"My work invites you to reflect on change as a continuous and deeply human experience."
